Christian audio free download of the month
In preparation for the Easter celebration of the cross and resurrection, Christian audio is offering two free downloads this month.
According to the christianaudio Web site, “The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the beginning of his teachings on what it means to truly follow Christ. He also speaks to cheap grace in that it's the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance; baptism without church discipline; communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
The second book is Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die by John Piper. He lays out 50 purposes for the death of Jesus. Why did Jesus come to die, and how do those reasons and purposes challenge us in our thinking of God and right relationship with Him?
Check out their Web site and enter the coupon codes MAR2010 for the Bonhoeffer book and MAR2010B for John Piper’s book.

Family profile – the Hardy family

Carroll, Kathy, Amanda, Nathanael
Beginnings
Kathy -- grew up in Des Moines
Carroll -- raised in Logan, Iowa, about an hour north of Omaha.
Going to UNI led to “UNMe” for Carroll and Kathy
Both Kathy and Carroll attended the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls, majoring in piano. Kathy also has a degree in math. They were introduced by mutual friends when Carroll was working on a master’s degree in piano performance.
Coming to Christ
Carroll became a Christian while he was a freshman at UNI through the ministry of the Navigators. And after graduating from UNI, he led the Navigator ministry while taking graduate courses at Eastern
Illinois University.
Kathy became a Christian at age 15 during a retreat at the Methodist church her family attended.
Married 30 years and counting
Carroll and Kathy were married on June 16, 1979. They originally lived in Cedar Falls while Kathy completed her student teaching – teaching music and math. At the same time, Carroll taught K-12 music in Plainfield.
They later moved to western Iowa where Carroll taught in Walnut and Kathy taught in Harlan.
And their third move, which led them to their current location, was back to Kathy’s grandparents' farm near Prole. They both worked as teachers in Norwalk until Kathy had Amanda. Carroll still teaches in Norwalk -- working with 140 fifth grade band students.
A few notes on a musically inclined family
Carroll and Kathy’s two children, Amanda and Nathanael, both love music like their parents. Their entire family likes to work on music projects and they have begun recording some of the music Carroll has written.
Amanda is currently working on a graduate diploma at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She has a master’s degree in oboe performance from the Conservatory and a bachelor’s degree in oboe performance from Drake. She hopes to join an orchestra after completing her schooling. She participates in the music ministry at her church and also co-leads a girls' Bible study for some of her fellow students.
Below, she is rehearsing with the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Nathanael is currently in 10th grade. In addition to playing the violin, he teaches violin to a few students, writes music and is working on a recording project of his own. He has an interest in electrical engineering or graphic design.
Below, Nathanael is rehearsing with the Central Iowa Symphony for a concert this past Monday.

He will be performing this coming Saturday night, March 6 in Ames at the Ames City Auditorium, 6th and Clark Street, 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). Adult tickets are $10 and students are only $1.
Both Amanda and Nathanael have competed and placed in the finals of the Bill Riley Talent Show at the Iowa State Fair. Amanda won first place in 2006.
A few other things you may or may not know...
Carroll and Kathy started the Christian Educators of Warren County, which currently has about 40 families as members. They home schooled both of their children and Kathy still uses her math degree and teaches algebra to students in the homeschool group, as well as piano. She has also taught writing.
The Hardys live on about 15 acres and love growing and preserving their own food, some of which they sell at the farmers’ markets in Indianola and Johnston, and Carroll is also a bee keeper.
Kathy says she used to sew a lot, but not as much in recent years. She has even made period costumes for Amanda and herself which they wore when they attended the Civil War Reenactment held in Lamoni, Iowa last September.

Coming to Crossroad
The Hardys began attending Crossroad Church in 1999 and have been part of the worship team for almost as long. “We like the preaching and the people,” says Kathy.
Carroll’s love of reading often comes out during the worship service as he shares a thought from a book. Some of his favorites are devotional books such as the “The Pursuit of God,” by A.W. Tozer and “A Godward Life,” by John Piper.
Carroll says, “The sound doctrine, great people and opportunity to use our musical gifts in ministry have kept us driving 45 minutes to Crossroad for the last 10 years.”
