February 11, 2010
This Sunday
Pastor Mike will be preaching from Joel this week where his topic will be “Wake up! The Day of the Lord Is at Hand.” The book of Joel is only three chapters long so you are encouraged to read through all of it in preparation for worship on Sunday. We will also be celebrating the Lord's Supper together.
Pastor Jaysson’s installation and open house
Next Sunday, February 21 we will officially install Pastor Jaysson as associate pastor at Crossroad Church. The installation service will be part of our morning worship service followed by a church potluck. Please bring a main dish and either a salad, vegetable or dessert to share.
The community Open House will be from 1:30 – 3 p.m. Feel free to invite your friends and family to welcome Pastor Jaysson.
Greeters wanted
If you are willing to help greet on Sunday mornings, please sign up at the Greeters’ table (by the name tags). For questions, please contact Dean Osborne.
Mission updates
· We recently received this communication from Dave Connon who is currently serving on a short-term mission trip in Chad, Africa. Please continue to pray for Dave while he is away and for Melinda and Bethany in his absence.
Thank you for praying for me while in Orlando and in Chad.
Working with the missionary kids has been going well. They're swell kids. It's a privilege to be here, work (and play) with them, and meet their families. It's also been neat to meet a few SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) people who remember Melinda from her two years of teaching in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
You've probably heard about the gas fire behind the oven in the apartment. Since then, God has kept us safe on the unpredictable Chadian roads. (On Sunday, while returning from an outdoor worship service, we stopped near an accident which had occurred a couple of minutes before. Two passengers in our vehicle, an SIL doctor and a Kid Zone member (an ICU nurse) jumped out and plunged into the crowd of people surrounding the vehicle. Bystanders extricated the injured people from the smashed-up car, and someone from SIL safely took them to hospitals. All ended well.)
This morning, one Kid Zone member got stuck in the apartment bathroom. The deadbolt stopped working, and it took the Kid Zone member (inside the bathroom), a Chadian maintenance man, an American (as interpreter), and me holding a flashlight (in the darkened hallway) to get her out.
I've had a couple of bumpy experiences, and they have revealed my own sinful desires and actions (e.g., the strong desire to be "right" -- and how I act when I feel that way). I've got a lot to learn. I'd appreciate your continued prayers.
I miss being at Crossroad for church. It will be nice to be back, Lord willing, a week from Sunday.
· Jake Decker leaves today (February 11) for Paraguay to visit members of the Terhaar family who are serving as missionaries in that country. Please pray that he would have safe travels and that his time with the Terhaars would be an encouragement for all of them. He will be gone for 10 days so please also pray for Ginnie and the girls while Jake is away.
· Matthew Krueger will be participating in a short term mission trip to Jamaica March 13 – 20 to work with Bethel Christian Mission. While there, he will be sharing the gospel with Jamaican students, helping the poor, visiting orphans and the sick, and working side by side with a local church to reach Jamaican teenagers. If you feel led to help support Matthew with some of the costs of this trip, please make your check out to Ankeny Evangelical Free Church and give it to one of the Kruegers or put it in the Krueger file folder. Matthew also has a few T-shirts he is selling for $20.
Help for grieving friends
Molly Piper (John Piper’s daughter-in-law) wrote several articles a few years ago after she and her family suffered through a late-term miscarriage. The articles are very insightful and are applicable for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. We hope you find them helpful. See Molly’s blog here.
